The Aesthetics Engineer wields technical production experience and domain expertise in photography and image processing. They will specialize in developing new features and functionalities that push the boundaries of mobile photography in practical and delightful ways. This role requires strong creative and technical skills to distill complex, open-ended problem spaces into effective engineering solutions that stay true to the scope of the problem.
This role is integrated into camera algorithm teams and is responsible for creating the highest caliber visual aesthetics with specialized internal software tools — successfully translating image processing algorithms and creative, subjective and cultural research into practical camera aesthetics.
- Oversee the overall health, growth, and day-to-day technical operations of the Aesthetics Science Look Development function for Apple Camera and Photos.
- Proactively identify and champion the development of necessary internal tools to achieve target stylization techniques aligned with subjective studies' results of visual trends, customer behaviors, and user preferences.
- Rigorously test and tune complex, early-stage prototype software. Proactively identify algorithmic drawbacks, debug visual artifacts, and meticulously isolate which specific controls or parameters are responsible for unexpected behaviors.
- Manage look development operations from beginning to end, including scaled file management, creative brief requirements, evaluation standards tracking, iterative protocol development and establishing and upholding look development refinement plans and schedule.
- Apply rigorous look development standards and contemporary photographic knowledge to the Aesthetics Science discipline.
- Maintain subject matter expertise in the complex preference space of different photographic renderings, including individual differences in preferences and cultural/historical/social trends in photography.
- Expand the team’s ability to generate best-in-class visual aesthetics, working with cross-functional engineering partners to build the appropriate software tools to control hardware and software pipelines.
- Inform the design of surveys to understand user perspectives and behaviors about photography and photo editing across diverse groups and cultures and over time.
- 15+ years of relevant experience required, including 1+ years of experience in research on a product development team.
- A subject-matter expert in contemporary photography and photographic aesthetics with a demonstrated portfolio and proven track record to create these aesthetics at capture and in post-production for commercial or editorial publishing.
- Exceptional proficiency in utilizing complex internal tooling and software interfaces for image tuning and look development
- Ability and interest in learning software and hardware image processing pipelines in order to identify opportunities for computational look development solutions and parameters optimization.
- Flexibility to travel when needed.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Experience in photographic post-production, creative visual production, on-site field production
- Experience with various editing software packages, cameras, film and digital systems, professional capture and edit workflows, set experience.
- Published portfolio establishing clear subject-matter expertise and hands-on input in creating a mainstream genre of photography at the highest caliber commercial, editorial or art industry standards. Portfolio to demonstrate professional image techniques, commercial creative production, or large-scale look development on deadline, references may be requested.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and evaluate complex, early-stage prototype software, with a strong aptitude for finding drawbacks, debugging visual issues, and isolating exactly which controls or parameters are causing specific problems
- Demonstrated experience with managing software development production processes (from a tuning, QA, and creative feedback perspective) and collaborating with cross-functional technical teams.
