This role is ideal for a student interested in marketing technology, nonprofit management, or project management who wants both meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to learn how mission-driven organizations operate behind the scenes.

About the Opportunity

This position offers hands-on exposure to how a nonprofit operates at the intersection of marketing, technology, and membership engagement. The Xtern will gain visibility into board governance, brand strategy, membership operations, digital systems management, and how nonprofit organizations are structured, managed and supported through marketing and technology systems.

Women & Hi Tech is primarily powered by a passionate, volunteer Board of Directors. Your “Xtern Sherpa” will be Darcy Lee—former President and current Active Emeritus board member. At times, you will also engage with various members of the Board of Directors and member volunteers over the course of the 10-week Xternship.

This position is part of the Xtern program through TechPoint. Xtern is for students who are enrolled in a University or College and is professional development experience on top of your full-time internship with Elements. Xtern provides three weekends where you will connect with other interns in tech and tech adjacent roles at companies in the Indianapolis area. Xtern weekends focus on professional development, civic engagement, and social opportunities to grow your network. You will have access to an online community, bonus fun events, and an opportunity to compete to explore Indianapolis through the Xtern Passport program.

Xtern also includes 10 week of free housing located at IU Indianapolis. Housing dates are from Saturday, May 23rd to Saturday, August 1st, 2026. You must relocate to Indianapolis for the duration of the summer to be eligible for this internship position and the Xtern program.

What You’ll Do

Marketing Technology & Systems Support

  • Learn and support administration of our membership management platform (Wild Apricot), including front-end website updates, membership management, and documenting system processes.
  • Assist with Salesforce CRM and marketing tools (including Salesforce Marketing Cloud) to support communications and engagement tracking.
  • Help inventory, organize and document digital systems (website CMS, CRM, password manager, marketing platforms, Microsoft, Hootsuite) to improve internal visibility and efficiency.
  • Help manage digital assets for efficiency, historical retention, and accessibility (e.g., images, photography).

Historical Data Research & Documentation

  • Create clean, organized documentation to support organizational functionality and data retention.
  • Conduct structured research on sponsorship, membership, and partnership history (e.g., locate, document, and validate historical engagement records).
  • Reconcile and document data across systems to improve reporting continuity.

Project Management & Process Improvement

  • Gather requirements from team members to evaluate current tools and workflows.
  • Research alternative membership management or marketing platforms and present findings with pros and cons analysis.
  • Support defined short-term projects (e.g., system comparison, workflow mapping, data cleanup initiative).
  • Develop clear process maps and documentation for recurring workflows.
  • Assist members of the Board with project management-related tasks (e.g., event logistics, Zoom setup and management, committee communications).
  • Support inventory tracking and supply logistics for event-related supplies.

Partner, Sponsor, and Member Engagement Support

  • Support communications related to partner collaborations and member and sponsor outreach.
  • Assist with organizing materials, metrics and engagement workflows that strengthen external partnerships, sponsor engagement, and member engagement.
  • Observe and contribute to cross-organization coordination efforts.

You’re a Great Fit If…

  • You thrive on being organized and creating order out of chaos.
  • You are tech savvy and/or have had experience working with CRMs (e.g., Salesforce) and WordPress-like content management systems. Bonus if you have experience working with Figma and/or are social media savvy.
  • You love digging in and learning new things. Nonprofits are scrappy. We don’t always know how to get things done, but we figure it out.
